Reserve Parachutes - The Federal Aviation Administration requires that anyone who makes an intentional skydive, must have a "main" and "reserve" parachute. The "reserve" parachute is the most important piece of equipment a jumper carries.

Rectangular Reserve Parachutes offer

Automatic Activation Devices - or "AAD"s as they are known, automatically activate the reserve parachute at a low altitude, if a jumper fails to successfully deploy the main parachute. Older style AADs were very unreliable, and had a reputation for killing jumpers when they would activate too high, at the wrong time, or not activate high enough to save the jumper who needed it. Very few licensed jumpers trusted them. In 1991, the "Cypres" AAD was introduced to the sport and a revolution was born. Because it was designed using modern technology (CYbernetic Parachute RElease System), they have proven to be extremely reliable, and are credited with saving over 500 lives. Today, most licensed skydivers won’t jump without a "Cypres" AAD! Ask your instructor to show you what type of AAD he or she uses.
